How To Protect Your Pet’s Skin During the Colder Climates
Humans aren’t the only ones who struggle with dry skin during colder months–so do our furry friends. The cold climate doesn’t provide enough protection against dry skin for both humans and pets. At All Star Grooming, we are committed to keeping your pets healthy and comfortable through this last stretch of winter. Below, we’ve shared some tips to help prevent and protect your pets from dry skin.
Why Do Pets Get Dry Skin?
There are many factors that contribute to dry skin flare ups with pets, including changes in weather, skin allergies, poor nutrition, and infections. Common symptoms of dry skin include itching, flaking skin, hair loss, inflammation, and biting. As a pet owner, it is important to recognize these signs and find appropriate treatments for your pet.
Tips To Help With Your Pet’s Dry Skin
Regular Grooming
Regular grooming throughout the winter can help their skin stay healthy and moisturized. Bathing your pet frequently with pet-friendly shampoos and brushing their fur daily can help distribute natural oils throughout their skin. At All Star Grooming, we use all-natural shampoos that are hypoallergenic, anti-itch, and calm on your pup’s skin. We only use shampoos that have no harmful chemicals or detergents but can kill any fleas or ticks that are present. This will protect your dog’s skin and coat while ensuring they feel clean, comfortable and happy.
Balanced Diet
A big reason why dogs have dry skin is due to a lack of protein and important fatty acids in the diet. When feeding your pet, try to buy organic wet and dry food that contains lots of nutrients. If you can, purchase food options that contain ingredients that support healthy skin, including Vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, Salmon Oil, Coconut Oil, etc.
Humidifier
Just like humans, a humidifier can help your pet’s skin become healthier when it is dry outside. If you notice that your pet has dry skin, place a standard humidifier in your home and near where your pet hangs out. Over time, this can heal your pet’s skin and make them feel more comfortable.
Tick and Flea Treatments
If your pet has common parasites, including fleas and ticks, it can lead to dry and itchy skin. In some cases, it can lead to skin irritations and allergies. In order to protect your pet’s skin and coat, look into preventative treatments for parasites. Make sure to consult your veterinarian before you purchase any topical or oral medications to ensure your pet stays healthy.
Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a great option for many pets, whether it is massaged into their skin or consumed through their diet. If you do not want to change your pet’s diet, you can use coconut oil as a lotion for their dry skin. Take a small amount of coconut oil in your hands, warm it up and soften it, then rub a layer evenly over their coat.
